10-Day Kurdistan Itinerary: Cities, Mountains and Heritage

Ten days changes the question from “what can I squeeze in?” to “where should I slow down?” This route gives the northern mountains and both major city bases enough time to feel different, while reserving a buffer for weather, rest or a missed connection. It is a strong choice for travellers who want landscape and culture without changing hotels every night.

This is an independent planning guide, not an official tourism or immigration source. Routes, weather, opening hours, prices, transport, entry rules and event details can change — verify current information locally before travelling.

The route at a glance

Start in Erbil, move east through Shaqlawa and Soran, then spend time around Rawanduz and the high Zagros. Continue west for Amedi, Lalish and Duhok before crossing to Sulaymaniyah for markets, museums and Dukan Lake. The order can be reversed, but the important principle is to give the mountain section at least two nights and to avoid scheduling the longest transfer immediately before a flight.

Ten days also gives you permission to leave a day unplanned. Mountain visibility may be better the following morning; a local recommendation may lead to a village or picnic area you did not expect; or you may simply want a second slow breakfast. Protecting that flexibility is part of a good itinerary.

  • A good split is 2 nights Erbil, 3 mountain/northern nights, 2 Duhok-area nights and 3 Sulaymaniyah nights.
  • Use a private driver for the loop or combine city taxis with carefully chosen day tours.
  • Keep border-adjacent and high-altitude outings local-guided and condition-dependent.

Building in rest and weather margin

The mountains are the least predictable part of the route. Rain can change a waterfall visit, cloud can erase a viewpoint, and snow or ice can alter a winter drive. Plan your must-see stop for the middle of the mountain stay rather than the final hour before a transfer. If conditions are poor, use the day for Soran or Duhok's town-based sights and return to the landscape when visibility improves.

In the lowland cities, heat can make a full outdoor schedule tiring. Put bazaars, museums and food stops around the hottest hours, and walk in the early morning or after sunset. Carry a layer for air-conditioned interiors and cooler highland evenings.

When to choose this over a package

An independent ten-day route rewards travellers who enjoy choosing a neighbourhood, lingering at a viewpoint and changing plans locally. A package can be a better fit if you want someone else to handle vehicles, language and the logistics of a multi-city loop. Either way, ask how the provider handles bad weather, route substitutions and changes to accommodation before paying.

Read the itinerary as a conversation starter, not a quote. Prices, availability, opening hours, transport schedules and entry rules change. Confirm every volatile detail with the relevant official or local source close to travel.

Day-by-day framework

Days 1–2

Erbil: history, food and arrival margin

Use the first two days to settle in, see the citadel and leave space for an arrival delay.

  • Erbil Citadel
  • Qaysari Bazaar
  • Museum or heritage stop
  • Food and neighbourhood walks

Day 3

Shaqlawa and the road to Soran

Climb gradually into the mountain landscape with stops chosen around daylight.

  • Shaqlawa

Days 4–5

Rawanduz and the surrounding valleys

Give the gorge, waterfalls and mountain towns two days so the route is not only a drive-through.

  • Rawanduz Canyon
  • Bekhal Waterfall
  • Gali Ali Beg
  • Optional local walk

Day 6

Amedi and Sulav

Travel west through the high country and explore the plateau and slopes below at a calm pace.

  • Amedi gates and lanes
  • Sulav area
  • Mountain tea
  • Duhok-area overnight

Day 7

Lalish with respect and time

Plan a culturally sensitive visit and do not treat a sacred place as a quick photo stop.

  • Valley landscape
  • Local advice on etiquette
  • Duhok or nearby overnight

Day 8

Duhok and its surroundings

Use the city as a slower base for the dam, markets and northern travel planning.

  • Duhok Dam area
  • Market or park
  • Rest evening

Day 9

Travel to Sulaymaniyah

Make the cross-region transfer in daylight, with stops only if the driver confirms the timing.

  • Slemani evening

Day 10

Sulaymaniyah and Dukan Lake option

Choose the city or lake based on weather and departure logistics, keeping the final hours calm.
