Overview
The Kurdistan Region of Iraq has a young, energetic technology scene, and a growing calendar of tech events, startup gatherings, hackathons and innovation meetups has emerged to support it. Sulaymaniyah in particular has become a focal point, alongside Erbil, and the mood at these gatherings is noticeably different from the formal business conference circuit: it is younger, more informal and often bilingual, with a strong streak of optimism about what local talent can build. For a visiting founder, developer or investor, dropping into a meetup is one of the quickest ways to take the pulse of the region's emerging digital economy.
What's happening
The calendar is varied and constantly evolving, but the recurring formats include:
- →Startup events and pitch nights where new ventures present to peers, mentors and potential backers
- →Hackathons and coding competitions that bring developers together to build prototypes against the clock
- →Tech meetups and conferences on software, entrepreneurship, design and digital skills
- →Innovation and incubator programmes that support founders with mentoring, space and early funding
- →Workshops and bootcamps teaching everything from programming to product and marketing
Why Sulaymaniyah
Long known as the region's cultural and intellectual centre, Sulaymaniyah has nurtured a community of entrepreneurs, developers and educators, supported by universities and a handful of pioneering innovation hubs. That tradition of openness and learning has made it a natural home for tech events, and the city's relaxed café culture provides exactly the kind of informal setting where small communities of builders tend to take root. Erbil, as the commercial capital, complements this with better access to investors, corporates and government, so the two cities increasingly function as two ends of the same ecosystem.
For visitors
Tech-minded travellers, investors and digital professionals will find an enthusiastic community that is genuinely keen to connect with outsiders, share ideas and learn from experience elsewhere. Because many events are grassroots, they are often announced close to the date on social media and through local tech hubs rather than on a fixed annual calendar, so dates and venues vary and are subject to change. Check current listings and reach out to a hub before you arrive, and you will usually find something worth attending — and a warm welcome when you do.
History & significance
A new generation
The region's tech scene has grown largely from the ambitions of a young, increasingly connected generation that came of age with smartphones, social media and global online learning. Supported by universities, by returning members of the diaspora who brought skills and networks back with them, and by a handful of pioneering hubs and incubators, this generation began organising the meetups, courses and competitions that now form the backbone of the scene. What started as informal gatherings of friends and classmates gradually became a recognisable community.
Sulaymaniyah's role
With its deep tradition of education, literature and culture, Sulaymaniyah became an early centre for entrepreneurship and innovation. It hosted some of the region's first tech communities and events, and its universities and cafés provided both the talent and the meeting places that a young ecosystem needs. The city's reputation as an intellectual hub gave its tech scene an early head start that it has largely retained, even as activity has spread to Erbil and beyond.
Building an ecosystem
While still emerging, the ecosystem of events, hubs, mentors and investors has steadily matured. Incubators and co-working spaces have given founders somewhere to work and to find one another; mentoring and bootcamps have helped close skills gaps; and a slowly growing pool of local and diaspora investors has begun to provide early capital. Tech events play a central, connective role in all of this — they are where talent, ideas and money meet, and where the community renews itself with each new cohort of founders.

Finding events
Tech events here are often grassroots, organised by community groups and announced close to the date via social media channels and innovation hubs rather than through a fixed yearly programme. The single best way to find what is on during your visit is to connect with a local hub, co-working space or university community a week or two ahead and ask — organisers are generally happy to welcome visiting professionals, and a personal introduction often opens more doors than any public listing.
Tips
- →Check the current visa requirements for the Kurdistan Region for your nationality before travelling, as rules change over time
- →Dress is usually smart-casual and informal — this is a relaxed scene, not a suited-and-booted one
- →Come ready to network and to share your own experience; the community is welcoming and curious, and reciprocity goes a long way
- →Universities, incubators and co-working spaces are excellent first points of contact and can point you to upcoming events
- →English is widely spoken among younger tech people, though a few words of Kurdish are always appreciated
- →Sulaymaniyah's café culture is part of the experience, so leave time for the informal conversations that often matter more than the formal sessions
- →Evenings and weekends are common for meetups, so plan your schedule with some flexibility
How to get there
Sulaymaniyah is a frequent host and is served by Sulaymaniyah International Airport (ISU), with most venues, hubs and universities a short taxi ride from the centre. Erbil, reached via Erbil International Airport (EBL), also hosts a steady stream of events and offers better access to investors and corporates.
The two cities are around three to three and a half hours apart by road, linked by regular shared taxis and by hired cars with drivers, so it is quite feasible to base yourself in one and dip into events in the other. Within each city, taxis and ride-hailing reach venues and hubs easily and cheaply. Because so many events are organised by community groups and announced informally, always confirm the specific location locally — a quick message to the organiser or host hub will save you arriving at the wrong address.
