Mountain & resort stays

Mountain resort accommodation in the Kurdistan Region — Radisson Blu Korek

Some of the most memorable accommodation in Kurdistan isn't in the cities — it's up in the mountains, by a lake, or in a village overlooking a gorge.

Amadiyah

A few guesthouses and small hotels sit at the base of this dramatic clifftop town. Staying overnight lets you experience the village after the day-trippers leave.

Shaqlawa

A popular mountain resort town — plenty of hotels, chalets, and resorts at all price points. Busy in summer; book ahead in July and August.

Rawanduz / Gali Ali Beg

A handful of guesthouses and resorts along the gorge road. The setting is spectacular; availability is limited so book early in peak season.

Dukan Lake

Lakeside chalets and resorts are available, particularly popular with Kurdish families. Best in spring and autumn.

Practical tips

  • Book accommodation in advance for summer (June–August) — Shaqlawa and mountain resorts fill up fast.
  • Prices are quoted in Iraqi Dinar (IQD) or US Dollars. Many hotels accept both.
  • Erbil and Sulaymaniyah have the most reliable Wi-Fi and international facilities.
  • Airbnb has limited listings in the Kurdistan Region — local booking platforms and hotel websites are more reliable.
  • Alcohol is available at many hotels in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, but not everywhere in Duhok.
  • Single travellers and solo women are well-catered for — Kurdistan is generally safe and welcoming.
